WALT: Play the recorder

We are learning to play the recorder with Mrs Cawood. We know how to play a "B". It is hard sometimes to keep our fingers over the holes. if we don't the recorder makes a squeaky sound. We ove learning the recorder. We know we are getting better because the sounds we are making are clearer and there is less squeaky sounds. We need to focus on the sounds and listen to the music so we play at the right time.

Learning rakau

Room 10 have been learning to use the rakau and keep in time to a tune "E Papa". It has taken lots of practice. We performed our learning at assembly. We were very happy that most of us were able to keep in time and if we made a mistake we learnt how to wait until we could come back in to join with the others.

Discovery time

We squeezed some lemon juice and put it in a container. We wanted to know what would happen when we added some baking soda to it.

We added the baking soda and stirred it around.

Straight away we noticed that the baking soda and lemon juice had a reaction. It started to go fizzy.

It fizzed up to the top of the cup. What would happen if we added more baking soda?

Wow. It went right over the side. What a reaction. Did it do what we thought?

Yes, most of us thought it would fizz but not many of us thought it would go right over the top of the cup.

maybe you can try this experiment at home to show Mum and Dad.

Continuing stories about Mt Tongariro

Nicholas. Yesterday the volcano made smoke and it was white. When you looked back there was ice on the top and at the bottom. The black was rocks and there was ash on the road. There was a truck cleaning the ash off the road.

Joshua. Yesterday there was a volcano eruption. There was ash on the roads. Some of the roads got blocked because it was dangerous. It was dangerous to go outside. The ash was on the road. Some police had to go on the mountain to see if anyone was hurt.

Fletcher. Last night a volcano erupted. I smelt the smoke. It was stinky, very very stinky. I heard from the news but I did not smell it. My Dad smelt it. Last night I couldn't have my window open because dad thought I smelt it. Some experts found out that the volcano had erupted.

Thomas. Last night the volcano erupted. I could see smoke. The volcano was throwing rocks and I know why the volcano erupted because of all of the earthquakes. The volcano smells like rotten eggs and there is lots of ash.

matthew. Yesterday there was a volcano eruption at Mt Tongariro. There was rocks and smoke. It became blurry. It was hrad to see. It was covered everywhere. It was scary because it was smoke and there was ash.

George. Yesterday a volcano erupted lots of smoke and rocks. There was ash on the road. A truck had a plough to push the ash off the road so the cars can go through. A horse got some ash on it. Someone brushed it off. The ash covered the hills.

Ben. Yesterday the volcano erupted and it smelled like rotten eggs. It threw rocks and hot steam came out. The ash went onto the road.

Katelyn. Last night the volcano was smoking and in the inside of the volcano there was hot lava and inside it was hot and it was erupting to and it was smelly and it is sticky too and all the rocks fall down the hills.

Charlotte. Yesterday a volcano erupted. I could smell it. It smelt like rotten eggs. It was dark on the news. It was really interesting. It was smoky and the good scientists are investigating to see if another volcano will explode. It is big.

Ambrosio. The volcano eruption exploded. It threw ash out. The explosion was on the road. It was all over the whole road. It was smelly like rotten eggs. It was amazing. It was awesome because it shot out all the smoke.

Mt Tongaririo Eruption

In Room 10 we have written stories about the eruption at Mt Tongariro. We wrote after watching a u Tube clip of the news items the day following the eruption.

Joseph. Tuesday morning the volcano erutped in Mount Tongariro, Taupo. On the road there is smoke. When I woke up I smelled some and it smelled like rotten eggs.

Ezrah. The volcano is awesome becuse I like seeing the rocks. The smoke went up in the air.

Kayla. Today we watched a video of a volcano. It was going to be cold if people did go in the snow yesterday. It happened. They had snow. It was very cold. The volcano exploded. The rocks went up and up.

Blake. Tonight the volcano at Mt Tongariro erupted. I can smell the smoke. It smells like rotten eggs.

Tayla. Yesterday the volcano erupted and all the rocks came out. The smoke came out to the volcano. All the smoke went in to peoples houses. ben smelled it. It smelt like rotten eggs.

Connor. Yesterday Mt Tongariro had an erution. It poured ash on the road. A big truck came to wipe the ash off the road. A horse got ash on it. The ash went all over roofs and trees.

Patrick. At Mt Tongaririo lots of rocks came out of the volcano. It smelt like rotten eggs. A horse got some ash covering his back.

Jasmine. The volcano erupted on Tuesday. and I saw smoke coming out of the volcano.

Hayley. Yesterday just before midnight our volcano erupted. It's the one near taupo. I know about it because I heard it on the news. For a volcano to erupt big stones came out and then comes out lava. It smells like rotten eggs because of the sulphur.

Visit to Te Manawa

Today we went to Te Manawa to learn about wonderful water. This is part of our Inquiry Unit about Water. We listened as Anne explained some of the activities and we tried some experiments with water. Read our comments and you will see some of the learning we did. It was a fantastic experience.
I enjoyed the morning and learned that water can drop from the clouds and can come back up again. This is part of the water cycle. (Charlotte)

The iceberg floats but most of it is under the water. (Ezrah, Jasmine, Thomas and Blake)

Water has a skin. (Connor)

When you put ice in water it gets smaller because the water is not as cold as the ice. (Matthew and Ben)

Most of the water in the world is in the ocean. (Ambrosio)

In the world we have a small amount of fresh water and lots of salty ocean water. (Joshua and Patrick)

We are using old water that we have already used but it has been recycled through the water cycle. (Hayley)

There is more water than land on earth. (Fletcher)

If you put ice in a jar and leave it, it will turn back into water. (Kayla and Nicholas)

I learned that when we put the ice in the water it shrunk. (Charlyse)

The water that we poured on the concrete went up to the sky and came down again as rain. (Joseph)

We sprinkled talcum powder onto the top of the water. We had to stay very still so the water did not move. Then Anne dropped a small piece of soap onto the top. It broke the skin on the water and made a pattern. She told us that this is water tension.

We were given a block of ice which we looked at and then put into the water. Some of us thought that the ice would float and some of us thought it would sink. Ezrah said "the ice floated, we could see the top but most of the ice was under the water".

Some of us thought about the big ship "Titanic" that sunk after it hit an iceberg.

The next experience we had was to put ice into a jar. We added a small amount of water to the jar and put the lid on. We made sure our hands and the jar was dry. We left it for a while and went back to look at it. We discovered that the jar looked blurry and when we held the jar we found that it was wet on the outside and felt cold. We talked about how the ice inside the jar had made it cold and when it met the warmer air on the outside it formed water. This is called condensation.

We poured water onto the concrete and drew a line around it. We wanted to see what would happen to the water if we left it there. Some of us thought the circle would get smaller and some of us thought the water puddle would get bigger.

When we came back to check the weather had changed and it had rained. We noticed that the whole area was now wet and although our circles were still there the puddles had joined together.

Discovery Time

We made juice with Mrs Edwards today. First we made carrot juice. Kieryan told us they had to cut up the carrots and put them into the juicer machine which was called oscar. When they pressed the carrots down it squeezed the juice out. It tasted just like carrot. (Kieryan)

It was yum but tasted exactly like carrots. (Charlotte)

Then we cut up apples. We had to use a sharp knife. Joseph told us that he had to be very careful because the knife was sharp.

"Keep your fingers out of the way when you use a sharp knife" said Charlotte "or you will get cut".

At Discovery Time today we used the construction materials to make a machine that would fly. We started off by putting lots of pieces together. Here are some of the results. Each machine was different. Ambrosio used a cylinder and attached some blue K-Nex to make a popeller. "Ambrosio has worked hard on this machine," said Charlotte.

"Ambrosio had to think very hard to work out how to put it togther" said Nicholas.

"I like how he put it together using those silver tyres on the bottom" sad Connor.

Monarch Caterpillars

At the start of the term Room 10 was given a swan plant. It had three baby caterpillars on it. We have been watching them closely as they have been growing. They are very hungry and have eaten all the leaves from the swan plant so Mrs Stantiall brought some pumpkin in for them to eat. We discovered that the caterpillars had been nibbling away on the pumpkin over the weekend and had grown even bigger.

This morning we noticed that two of our caterpillars were clinging to the stem of our swan plant. This one has attached itself to the stem by using a little white spot of mucus. It is beginning to curl up. We are watching it closely to see how long it takes to form a cocoon around itself.

We were surprised when we came back from morning tea this morning to find that our second caterpillar was going into a cocoon. It was a very pale green colour. The caterpillar was still working on forming his cocoon because he was still wriggling as he made the cocoon form around himself. When we came back into the classroom after lunch Charlyse noticed that he had stopped wriggling and now the cocoon looked darker.

This morning we found a cocoon in the garden on the underside of a leaf. We discovered when we looked closely that we can see the new monarch butterfly inside. He is still tucked up inside the cocoon but we can see him. We are wondering how long it will take him to hatch out. Will he wait until we have gone home today or will he still be like this tomorrow.
